From: Albemarle
County, VA
To: Madison County, VA
Distance: 19 Miles
Topography: Flat with occasional gradations.
Weather: Started off looking like the sky was going to split and
bring forth a deluge but instead it chose to simply loom above as
an unfulfilled promise.
Not too hot, not too cold, not too sunny, and occasionally a nice
breeze provided perfect Marching weather for the entire group.
Details: The
second half of our opening day of walking was swallowed up by two
presentations at Albemarle High School, and Thomas Jefferson Memorial
Unitarian Universalist Church in Charlottesville. As a result it
was assumed we would be five miles behind schedule for a few days
but this morning changed all that. The sun stayed hidden beneath
some threatening storm clouds, a hangover from the power cutting
blasts of the prior evening, and the heat was held at bay. By our
first break the group had rallied back just shy of our original
itinerary, and by lunch time some serious confidence of pressing
forward for another ten miles had emerged.
The March:
Start: 9:00 am
Break: 11:00 am
Lunch: 12:30 pm
2nd Half: 1:30 pm
Finish: 5:00 pm
Avg. Time: 1st Half: 3.25mph (10 miles in 3 hours)
2nd Half: 3.25mph (10 miles in 3 hours)
Total Time: 6 hours
Marchers:
Core: 16 (Khempo Ngawang Dorje, Charlottesville, VA; Jigme Norbu,
Indiana; Tsering Yeshi, Vermont; Thupten Zopa, NY; Tse Dorje, NY;
Tenzin Sherab, Hawaii; Yeshe Gyaltsen, Chicago; Kunsang Dechen,
Chicago; Pala, Chicago; Ngawang Norbu Sherpa (aka Colonel), Boston;

VA, Ananda Reed, Philadephia; Larry Gerstein, Indiana; Douglas Herman,
NY)
Guests: 5 (much
thanks to Garner, Victor, Siki and their dad Anthony Lopez; as well
as Lobsang for coming out to March with us)
Casualties: Smooth
sailing, well except for all the developing blisters, and Dr Gerstein's
gullibility, which took a serious drubbing courtesy of Jigme.
In the evening Dr Gerstein assumed his newly appointed duties as
a thrown to the wolves Nurse of Tibetan Medicine as he successfully
assisted in the lancing of three bulbous blisters on the feet of
Thupten Zopa, Khempo Ngawang Dorje, and Tsering Dorje
Stand Outs: Ama-la and Pala-
solid dedication and strong marching for their upper seventies
Rating: Everyone
is coming into their own groove.
Great pacing and tremendous 'daily progress'
