(<- Previous Report) March 18, 1997 (Next Report ->)

Juile Crow, from Indianapolis, Indiana and one of the March's organizers and a walker for the entire route.

The presentation at The University of Toronto began with a performance by Fools for Love (Diane Cartwright, Tenzin Jamyangling, Lucy Fukushima, Dona Ishiura).

A drum pounds and three stupidly grinning faces shout, "Chinese Government Policy!" and then their bodies twist together in piles of pain.

As an answer, the drummer shouts, "You are pregnant and forced to abort your baby."

Again grinning, "Chinese government policy!"

"Protesting for freedom you are jailed and routinely and repeatedly raped with a 7000 volt electric cattle prod."

"Chinese government policy!"

"Your natural resources are ravaged for Chinese benefit and your wild animals killed off for sport."

"Chinese government policy!"

"The precious Buddhist teachings are suppressed and monks and nuns are forced to acknowledge the state as the highest authority."

Then over low chanting the audience hears, "Number of Tibetans dead as a direct result of the 'peaceful' liberation of Tibet by China:

  • prisons and labor camps - 173,221
  • torture - 97,731
  • execution -156,758
  • uprising - 432,705
  • starvation - 342,970
  • suicide - 9002

over 1.2 million Tibetans dead."

After the presentation the walkers and many friends returned the The Tengye Ling Buddhist Center (the temporary Toronto home of the walkers) for a late dinner, a viewing of the film Escape From Tibet, a puja and then many heartfelt thank-you's and goodbye's to the very kind people of Tengye Ling.

During the offering of katas Norbu said, "From this place we will have many happy memories."

Tempa Lektsog gets interviewed by The Hamilton Spectator while en route.

Nearing the end of the day's route walkers, Tempa Lektsog and Jeff Cupchik take a break.
