Mission Statement:
The International Tibet Independence Movement (ITIM) was founded by Thubten Jigme Norbu (Taktser Rinpoche) and Larry Gerstein on March 18, 1995 to obtain Tibet's Independence through non-violent methods.

Objectives:
1. Articulates a concrete vision of Tibet as an Independent Nation.

2. Promotes the use of documentation that advocates using Independence as the primary focal point for activities relating to the Tibetan cause world-wide.

3. Demands that the voice of Tibetans for Independence be heard by government and non-governmental agencies world-wide.

4. Encourages the collective, coordinated participation of all Tibetans and their supporters to develop & implement strategies for economic, legal, and political action.

Premises:
1. Tibet was an Independent country before 1949.

2. Only Independence for Tibet can ensure the survival of the Tibetan land and its people, culture, and religion.

"Tibet should become a sovereign, independent nation. I believe we have the right to make the choice. We have the right to demand and we must work." His Holiness, The Dalai Lama, Shadow Over Tibet: Stories in Exile, 1994

"We Tibetans must stand up and loudly state, "China Get Out of Tibet." We must also shout, "Tibet Must Be Independent." My brother, His Holiness the Dalai Lama, in his wisdom has asked the Tibetan people to speak up about the future for Tibet. He has also requested that our people take more responsibility for Tibet's future. Finally, my brother has once again encouraged Tibetans to remain non-violent in their actions to regain their country. I totally agree with my brother's position." Thubten J. Norbu, Indianapolis, Indiana, March 16, 1995

"The solution for Tibet includes each of us. Our greatest danger is that we Tibetans will become too comfortable and we will forget we even had our own country. Our greatest strength is our wisdom, generosity, and ability to act. Fight for justice with compassion in your heart and Tibet will be independent once again." Thubten J. Norbu, Indianapolis, Indiana, March 16, 1995
