May 29 Memorial Day pot luck dinner
Our Memorial Day (Monday, May 29) began with packing and saying good-bye to the Pismo Beach Presbyterian Church, which proved to be a wonderful place to stay, and a few of our friends who had to get home. We offered special prayers in rememberance of all those who have died in wars before walking. We did the same for the San Diego walkers because their walk began today.
We walked through Guadalupe, down another country road, and into Santa Maria where we would stay for the next two nights. Lately, Ani Pachen has been asking to be dropped off ahead of the group because her walking pace is a bit different than the rest of the group. And generally a couple of our western female walkers will join her so she doesnıt have to walk alone. It isnıt that she necessarily walks slower, itıs just that she walks short distances and then takes 30-second rests. Her ankles had been bothering her earlier in the walk and this is how she has learned to deal with the problem. Her conviction and dedication is overwhelming to say the least. We met our new hosts housing/dinner Lee and Pat Elder while walking. They are an older couple who are quite involved in their churchSt. Peterıs Episcopal Church in Santa Maria.
They were gracious enough to not only coordinate housing for us, but they also put together a potluck dinner each night, a program the second night and found us shower and laundry facilities at a near by homeless shelter. Their kindness, along with that of the St. Peterıs congregation, touched our hearts. All of our friends that traveled down from the East Bay stayed for dinner, which was a good thing because there was a plenty of food for everyone. Thank you. Thank you.
