June 18
Walking through Malibu was a bit too easy on Sunday, June 18. We covered 9-miles by lunchtime.
We took a long rest on the lawn at the entrance to Pepperdine University. Again Tseten Phanucharas, a board member of the Los Angeles Friends of Tibet, sponsored lunch this time. We also enjoyed a Father's Day cake for all of the dads in the groupPa-Tenzin-La, Tsewang, David from Santa Barbara and myself (Benjamin).
Right about the time lunch was finished the campus cops came by and politely told us that we were on "private property" and needed to leave. We said no problem, cleaned-up and left. It was rather uneventful, but the timing was almost too perfect.
Sure enough we walked about another mile or so and were finished for the day. The wild thing was that an impromptu rally broke out and we all started chanting Free Tibet slogans. It seemed like almost every car honked for us.
Unfortunately we caused a small fender bender. I say caused because the woman driving her Range Rover was watching us so intently that she didn't notice the BMW in front of her and reared ended the guy. No one was hurt and the damage was just enough to call for a body shop. It was only the second time over the course of our five walks that we've caused an accident.
Again it was off to Los Angeles and a TASC member's home for dinner that evening. Karma Lodi, Cultural Events coordinator, was our host this time. He has a nice house with a big yard (well, big for L.A.). And, his Tibetan food was excellent.
A small group of coordinators went to a board meeting before we could head over for dinner. There were many representatives from all of the local Tibet Support Groups present and the conversation was heavy and long. We had a lot to discuss in preparation for the final week of the March for Tibet's Independence. As the coordinating organization we make it a point to involve the local TSGs. It is important and a bit difficult, but very worth it. It all worked out in the end.
